The Balkan Hockey League has been announced as an international competition created to accelerate the development of ice hockey across the Balkan region, and to give players, clubs and supporters a more competitive platform than domestic schedules alone can offer.
Three clubs form the inaugural field. HK Spartak Subotica represent Serbia, HC NSA Sofia represent Bulgaria, and Stado Skopje represent North Macedonia. Between them they cover three national federations and three ice surfaces.
The competition is the second attempt at a cross-border league in the region. A four-team Balkan Ice Hockey League ran for the 2015/16 season and was won by Spartak Subotica before folding. The clubs behind this competition are building it to last.
